Healthy eating habits and active lifestyles mean a bright future for Queensland kids!

QKFN FOR SCHOOLS

The Queensland Kids Fresh Net (QKFN) program was created to help improve approaches to the education and promotion of health and nutrition in primary school children.

The program encourages school children to make healthy eating choices and live active lifestyles and targets children, their parents, teachers and tuckshop conveners. QKFN includes school presentations and market tours, resources and promotions for tuckshops and teachers and website information and activities.

All program elements are absolutely FREE! All schools have to do is to register and they are eligible for all QKFN promotions and resources.

QKFN is a comprehensive promotional and educational program designed to increase the awareness and consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables by primary school-aged children.

QKFN FOR TUCKSHOP CONVENORS

Tuckshop conveners from schools in Queensland can register their schools for FREE and gain access to:
The Fresh for Kids Internet site, which is a comprehensive, and fun internet site created to educate children about fruit and vegetables

  • Tuckshop education materials including the 'Canteen Fresh' brochures, which are designed to provide tuckshop managers with seasonal ideas and information to help them increase sales of fresh produce
  • Posters
  • Colourful seasonality guides and recipe brochures
  • Bookmarks, tattoos, stickers and other materials
  • Use of the F & V Gang characters

Apples Ain't Apples School Visits & Market tours

The Apples Ain't Apples School Visit has been designed for students aged between 7 and 9 years. A representative from the Brisbane Markets will come to your school to conduct the presentation, which aims to educate students on the process of getting produce from the farm to their plate, a look at some different varieties of fruit & vegetables, and an apple taste testing session. The visit may also include an appearance by costume character 'Megabite Apple' or 'Summa Strawberry' (depending on availability of characters).

Brisbane Markets Limited conducts Market Tours for schools participating in the Fresh for Kids program. On this unique field trip students learn about the history of the Brisbane Markets, the central Market system, how fresh produce gets from the farm to the plate, and the variety of different fruit and vegetables available in the market.

The F&V Gang Dancers

Brisbane Markets Limited has developed a song and dance troupe to perform at relevant children's events. The F & V Gang(tm) Dance Troup, comprising five performers representing F & V Gang(tm) member perform songs such as the specially written "We're the Fruit and Vege Gang", to encourage healthy and active lifestyles for children.

RNA Show (EKKA)

Brisbane Markets is the naming rights sponsor of the Brisbane Markets Agricultural Hall at the RNA Show, better known as the Ekka. Each year it stages an interactive, fun and educational activity such as cooking classes for children that are held four times a day during the 10-day event.

 Rural Discovery Day

Held as part of Queensland Primary Industries Week 2008, this event took place for the sixth time in 2008. The day featured presentations and displays from a variety of Primary Industry groups, which aimed at educating city children on the importance and relevance of primary industries to Queensland.
