Sydney Markets Tours
While the city sleeps the Sydney Markets have been awake for hours!
Sydney Markets is Australia's major centre for the marketing of fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers. The markets’ 43 hectare site is located at Flemington in the heart of Sydney and opposite the Homebush Bay Olympic site.
An estimated $2 billion (or 1.5 million tonnes) of fresh fruit and vegetables and $100 million of flowers are sold annually through Sydney Produce Market, Sydney Growers Market and Sydney Flower Market.
This ‘one-stop-shop’ includes include packaging, exporters, providores, warehouses, agricultural supplies, industry associations, banks, shops, cafes, post office and other business facilities.
Thomson Street, as the preferred tour operator for Sydney Markets Limited, offers a full range of tours of Sydney Markets, including tours for school students.
What you will see
- Sydney Produce Market – 140 agents and wholesalers form the largest fresh fruit and vegetable market in Australia, catering to professional buyers such as supermarkets, restaurants and greengrocers.
- Sydney Flower Market – Australia’s largest flower market made up of 170 grower-sellers who together sell approximately $100 million worth of flowers to florists annually.
- Sydney Growers Market – A daily outlet for approximately 400 growers in the Sydney basin to sell fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs.
Tour: time & booking
- Tours run Monday to Friday throughout the year.
- Tours are run by specially trained guides.
- Tours are approximately one and a half hours in duration.
- We can accommodate a maximum of 20 students per guide. Larger groups will be split up into groups of 20 or under, each with their own guide.
- For primary students, we recommend a maximum of 15 students per guide and a ratio of 1 adult for every 4 to 5 children.
- Starting times for tours are between 5.30am and 8.00am. We recommend starting no later than 7.30am in order to catch the markets in full swing.
- Breakfast, morning tea, snack packs or refreshments can be arranged at the conclusion of the tour.
- Plan your tour for a Friday so students can compare wholesale and retail markets. An early morning tour of the wholesale markets can be followed by a visit to Paddy’s Markets at Sydney Markets.
- Bookings are essential.

The above rates are for primary and secondary school students only. Adult rates apply for tertiary students.
