About the Fresh for Kids ‘Chow Down and Win’ Canteen Campaign

This year Sydney Markets teamed up with Healthy Kids Association and the NSW Cancer Council to bring Fruit ‘n’ Veg Month! While students learnt about fruit and veg in the classroom, the Canteen Campaign was a great way to get kids excited about healthy options available at their canteen.

The Canteen Campaign is designed to encourage kids to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables and to purchase them from their school canteen. The Campaign commenced Monday 30 August, 2010 and concluded Friday 24 September, 2010.
During the Campaign, students who made the healthy choice and purchased fresh fruit and/or vegetables from their school canteen instantly received a sticker card containing a large sticker to keep and a token sticker which was placed on the entry form. Once students had completed their entry form, they return it to their canteen where they instantly received a Fresh for Kids crazy straw. On doing so they were eligible to enter the draw to win some fantastic prizes.

This year the canteen campaign was sponsored by our friends at Cartoon Network and their TV show CHOWDER. Chowder is a young apprentice to a magical chef. His days are filled with running errands, helping around the kitchen, and learning how to turn some of the weirdest ingredients you've ever heard of into some of the best dishes you've ever tasted. Chowder is known for slicing, dicing and constantly causing trouble in the kitchen. Hold on to your apron … you're in for some laughs!

Australian netballer Susan Pratley, former Olympic swimmer Craig Stevens, current discus World Champion Dani Samuels and Paralympian Jayme Paris joined the campaign as Ambassadors to help promote healthy eating and an active lifestyle amongst school aged children.

Six schools across Sydney and the Central Coast had the opportunity to meet the Ambassadors and the F&V Gang. The Ambassadors participated with the students in a mini Olympics and talked to them about foods and activities they enjoy and showed them that healthy eating can be fun and delicious.

NOTE: Even if there is no canteen at your school, you can still take part in the canteen campaign. Instead of rewarding students for making purchases at the canteen, reward them for bringing fresh fruit and vegetables from home.
